Many will never have to experience true poverty. For those that do, my heart goes out to you.
It is estimated that 1 in 10 people are living in extreme poverty worldwide, that is over 698 Million people are living on $1.90 USD a day or less. People living without clean water, electricity, access to healthcare or education.
How does a world get to this point? Where 1 person in every 10 is denied the simple necessities in life? Is it simply too easy to take what we have for granted and to ignore what we cannot see?
No one ever chooses to live in poverty. It’s not from a lack of trying, it’s not from a lack of wanting change. It is a product of surroundings and lack of opportunity. Many are taken advantage of, in times of desperation little can seem a lot.
I myself have felt the effects of what poverty takes from you and the pressure it placed on your families. I however have been fortunate to live in a country where opportunity is abundant and education is free.
It is my aim, through Ethos + Co. to work with poverty stricken communities and individuals to help established ethical and fair trade avenues, not only to help close the gap, but to open the mind of consumers to see that we can make a difference with very sustainable and ethical purchase.
We are also in the process of creating a grant for women in business, aimed to help women setup sustainable businesses and build wealth for their communities. (Watch this space)
